Bitches, beers and rock´n´roll - A reality, but far from the every day life of Poncho. He lives and works at the simple fishing camp of Punta Conejo, a remote spot on de barrier between harsh Baja Californian desert and the wild pacific sea. Without electricity and clean fresh water he and his fellow fishermen passes months after months in in solitude, fishing for money. For more money than they would have made back home. A lot more.
About 45 years ago the first fisherman settled in Punta Conejo. Moving north searching to make money he discovered the potential of exploiting the sea just outside Baja California. Hit by the northern cold current in winter and the warm south pacific current in summer, Punta Conejo is home to a very diverse marine life. Today, the fishermen at the camp earn during lobster season up to 7000 pesos per day. That makes their monthly salary around 90.000 mexican pesos, which is an impressive amount anywhere.
Money is good, but the life of these fishermen is never as simple as it might seem. Those who has family spend most of their time away from their wives and children. Some bring them all, having them sacrifice their normal social life and almost all modern commodities. Others, like Poncho, has a hard time finding somebody to share his life; “-life is not easy here, it is very lonely. It is hard to find a woman that want to share this kind of life”. Poncho has been working for eight years at this camp but does not have any money saved so far. When i ask him on what he spends it all, he smiles shy and answer: “-Bitches, beers and rock´n´roll”.
